It is with great sadness but with absolute respect that we pay tribute to the late Anna Piaggi who sadly passed away this week.
A woman who needs to introduction, Anna will be sorely missed by many whose lives she graced with her eccentric style and endearing personality.
Famous for her blue hair and a regular on the f-row (front row) thanks to her time spent as beauty writer for Italian Vogue, Anna will be missed especially by her Italian Vogue Editor Franca Sozzani, who paid a tribute to her via Twitter following the news; “23 years working together… Will remember you forever Anna.”
Sozzani was not the only one to take to Twitter to express their devastation – Burlesque phenomenon Dita Von Teese also wrote; “So sad to hear that Anna Piaggi, one of my last icons of beauty and fashion has passed. She was the height of glamorous eccentricity.”
Along with the likes of Karl Lagerfield, Milliner Stephen Jones and Stefano Gabbana, Anna received tributes from many of her close friends, whose friendships had formed throughout their career together and stood the test of time.
Anna Dello Russo, who some may call a modern-day Anna Piaggi, released a statement saying; “We are all saddened for the loss of Anna Piaggi. She was a style icon, a journalist and a writer. For 23 years, her double pages in Vogue have always set trends.”
Beginning her career at the start of the 60’s editing Arianna, one of Italy’s first ever women’s magazines, Anna’s talent was quickly recognised and she joined Vogue a decade later, where she introduced the fashion-hungry women of Italy to her famous double-page-spreads.
In 1986 Karl Lagerfeld sketched ten years’ worth of Anna’s outfits in his journal and most recently, the Victoria and Albert museum in London put together a collection of Anna’s gowns and shoes in their ‘Anna Piaggi Fashion-ology- exhibition. New York photographer, Bill Cunningham also referred to Piaggi as “a poet with clothes” in his documentary on street style.
Passing at the age of 81 and with a successful fashion career behind her, Anna will surely continue continues to influence and astonish those in the fashion industry. One thing is for sure: STRUCTURE will certainly be remembering her in every way possible. Our Managing Director, Sid Cook has selected his favourite ever quote from Anna, where she talks about her love of fashion;
“”It is a moment, an expression. My philosophy of fashion is humour, jokes and games. I make my own rules. I never pick up something and just throw it on my back like that. There’s a little bit of study, and it’s always better if I think about what I’m going to wear the night before the next day. And what is to be avoided at all costs is the twinset look, the total look.”
