She became the ultimate sex symbol yet remained a lady, exhuded confidence but was crippled with insecurities; not an actress, but a star, the late, fascinating Marylin Monroe still inspires art, books, documentaries and film. Singing Happy Birthday to President Kennedy, holding down her billowing white dress over the subway grate, or even Marylin reading; her iconic imagery is recogniseable to those far too young to remember her.
This month, to commemorate 50 years since her untimely death, Getty Images presents Marilyn, a collection of intimate, beautiful and rare imagery and ephemerae. The exhibition’s pictures range from the young aspiring Monroe through to her glamorous heights of international Hollywood stardom.
Alongside the photographs, original film costumes and dresses from famous collector David Gainsborough Roberts will be on show.
